The Wilderness Society's Legacy Roads Green Jobs Fact Sheet
The Wilderness Society just released a Green Jobs Fact Sheet that mentions Legacy Roads projects.
Some highlights:
- A University of Oregon Study shows that for every $1 million invested in restoration:
- between 13-29 jobs are retained or generated.
- $2.1 million in total economic activity generated.
- $1 million could decommission 100 miles of unneeded roads - improving water quality and habitat * The jobs created are typically "shovel ready" (e.g., heavy equipment operators, tree planters, welders, construction workers, etc) and "computer ready" (e.g., GIS specialists, engineers).
- Spending $93 million per year (the total Legacy Roads funding for FY 2010) for the next 20 years to implement a "Right-Sized" Road system as envisioned by the Forest Service (126,000 fewer miles then the current system) would create between 1,209 and 2,697 high-wage, high-skill jobs for rural communities.
