Fixing the Mess

The following images show just what is happening on the ground with Legacy Roads funding.  These projects are being executed all over the country, but are focused largely in the Pacific Northwest where fully one-quarter of the forest roads system exists.

As the following photos illustrate, it takes heavy equipment to decommission roads.  These equipments operators are sometimes descendents of the original road builders!  Sometimes they are the original road builder!  Decommissioned roads offer good habitat as they grow back in.  Bears in particular prefer to use decommissioned roads (contact Adam Switalski, WildlandsCPR for more information), although bobcats, fishers, ungulates, and other animals use the restored habitat as well.
